Triple riders on bike manhandle traffic cop

PANCHKULA: Two women and a man who were on a when traffic policemen stopped them for triple riding and not wearing helmets at old Panchkula light-point on Monday. People recorded videos of the incident.

Traffic police sub-inspector Jag Raj, 55, said in his complaint that around 12.20pm when he was checking vehicles at old Panchkula light-point, he saw a man driving a motorbike (CH-46-T-1215) with two women as pillion riders. They weren‘t wearing helmets. When the sub-inspector stopped them to check their vehicle documents, the biker -Pankaj, 27, a resident of Sector 25, Chandigarh – started arguing with the cops and said he worked at the house of a politician, so he should not be challaned. When the sub-inspector again asked him to show documents, Pankaj allegedly started shouting at the cop and said, “Mai teri vardi utarwa dunga, mai bahut bade politician ki kothi par kaam karta hoon, tu nahi janta mujhe abhi.” He then abused the cop.

As people gathered on the spot, Pankaj asked one of the women accompanying him to take out her slipper and thrash the cop. The woman took out her footwear and tried to attack the sub-inspector but he managed to flee towards his beat box and called up the police control room (PCR). Pankaj was finally nabbed.

The sub-inspector alleged that Pankaj asked the woman to file a false complaint of sexual harassment against him.

On the basis of the complaint given to Sector 5 police station and videos of the incident as evidence, cops registered a case under sections 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Sub-inspector Mohan Lal, in charge of Sector 7 police post, said, “We have registered a case and arrested the accused, Pankaj.”
