Transwoman poll candidate goes missing in T‘gana

HYDERABAD: Muvvala, the first candidate from the transgender community to contest the Assembly polls on a Bahujan Left Front (BLF) ticket, has mysteriously gone missing from her on Tuesday.

Chandramukhi last spoke to a friend at around 7.30 am at her house, when she knocked on her door to wake her up. But an hour later, her room was locked from outside, her phone switched off, and her whereabouts unknown to locals.

The transgender community came to Banjara Hills police station after the news spread. Police registered an FIR and formed three special teams to trace her. “We are still checking the CCTV footage near her house. According to the complaint, she went to sleep at around 5 am and had asked someone to wake her up at 7 am, as her campaigning was supposed to start by 9 am,” said KS Rao, assistant commissioner of police, Banjara Hills.

Police inspector Govinda Reddy said that Chandramukhi received the last call at 8.17 am, and her phone was switched off after that near Erramanzil Colony.

“No one noticed her walking out of her house,” said Vyjayanthi Vasantha Mogli, a transgender community activist from Hyderabad.

“She never goes anywhere without telling me. She was supposed to meet me at on Tuesday for campaigning. When she didn’t turn up, I called her friend staying in the same building, and that’s when we realised she is missing,” said Vinnu.

Chandramukhi‘s mother, Anitha Muvvala, last spoke to her daughter around 9 pm on Monday. “When she told me she wanted to contest, I was tense. But, she assured that she would be fine. She never goes anywhere without informing me. She was happy with the way things were progressing,” she said. “The copy of the FIR will be submitted to the EC tomorrow. Transgender candidates should be given police protection,” said activist Rachana Mudraboyina.
