With 14kg gold, ‘Golden Baba‘ is back for Kumbh

ALLAHABAD: A youth patiently stands near the elderly saint with his hands cupping an eclectic mix of ornaments in his hands. All eyes are on the elderly man, clad in saffron robes, as he patiently picks one ornament after the other and starts wearing them.

Sudhir Makkar aka ‘Golden Baba‘

When he walks, he needn‘t speak, the jingle of the various chains adorning his neck are enough to tell people aka ‘‘ was there.

A saint associated with Juna Akahara, Makkar often hogs the limelight for wearing various gold ornaments, worth over Rs 5 crore.

He recently arrived in Allahabad from Haridwar to set up a camp on the Mela ground, ahead of the Kumbh-2019. The saint was once a businessman based in New Delhi who chose to follow the path of faith and joined the Juna Akhara in 1975.

With each passing year, the weight of his gold ornaments keeps on increasing. If it‘s a new locket one year, then it‘s a chain or an armlet the next one. He even has a jacket made out of pure gold.

As per an estimate, he was wearing about around 14.5kg of gold jewellery in 2017. His collection included 21 gold chains, 21 lockets of various deities, armlets and even a gold jacket. The weight of the ornaments has increased to 20kg this year.

The saint had camped in the Allahabad during the Maha in 2013 and had attracted a lot of awed looks from not only pilgrims and tourists but media as well. Come January 15, and you will be able to spot ‘Golden Baba‘ camping in a ‘ shivir‘ of Juna Akhara during the forthcoming Kumbh. “I will be attending the Kumbh Mela next year and will perform an important yajna for the welfare of the society. I would also bless my followers and devotees who visit our camp,” said Golden Baba.
