MLA: Speed up land acquisition process

Coimbatore: Singanallur MLA N Karthik has urged the district collector to speed up the land acquisition process for the Coimbatore airport expansion project.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, he requested the administration to pay the compensation to landowners at the earliest. Karthik alleged that the government has been dragging their feet on this issue for the past eight years. The MLA said residents of SIHS Colony at Bharathipuram were “not opposed to the expansion of the airport but welcome it”. “However, the residents want to be compensated immediately, so that they can start their life elsewhere,” said the MLA.

“During a meeting at the collectorate last year, it was discussed that all the land within 1km radius from the airport would be compensated at Rs 1,500 per sq ft. Because of the delay in payments, residents are left in a quandary,” he said. “Many of their children are in schools. They need to buy another place, build a house and shift and start their lives soon,” he added.

With residents continuing to feel that the compensation being offered is lesser than the market value of the land, Karthik has demanded that these residents be given an alternate plot of land, where they can build houses with the monetary compensation given to them and settle down.
