Goons on bike molest woman, assault cops

KOLKATA: A 36-year-old woman was allegedly molested in front of her husband and 10-year-old son and a police team was shoved around by a property dealer and 10 of his bike-borne henchmen in the wee hours of Monday in the Nayabad area on the southern fringes of the city. The woman and her family stay at a residential complex.

The accused threw stones at the main door and a window, forcing the family members to come out. As soon as the woman came out and asked them to leave, she was pulled towards the waiting bikes. When her son tried to intervene, he was beaten up and received injuries on his head. The woman managed to call the , but when they arrived, they too were shoved around by the accused. The child’s head injuries are serious, felt doctors at the Peerless Hospital.

The cops, however, managed to nab three of the accused. A case has been initiated at the Panchasayar police station. Among those who have been arrested is the property dealer Basudeb Mondal (43), a resident of Nabapally in Sonarpur, and his associates, Arindam Mondal and Debasis. Raids are on to nab the others.

According to the victim, it was seven months ago that she had tried to buy a plot of land in the Nayabad-Nabapally area when they came across Basudeb. A month later, Basudeb allegedly called her and wanted to talk to her.“Even as I resisted all his advances, he kept harassing me. He would even try to click my photographs,” the victim claimed.

The woman said it was around 12.15am that the bikers, led by Basudeb, came to the building and began throwing stones. “We woke up in fright and headed to the main gate. We stay on the second floor and those staying on the first had already had their window panes broken. The moment I stepped out, Basudeb tried to drag me onto a bike. They abused my husband and hit my son on his head,” the victim told police.

A case has been initiated under IPC sections 147 and 148 (rioting), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (insulting modesty of woman), 354 () and 353 ( or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty). “Raids are being carried out in Nayabad and Sonarpur,” said an officer.
